Oral health suffers as recession continues

As many of us feel the strain on our pockets, skipping regular dental appointments seems like a good way of saving money, yet in the long run this is far from the truth.

A recent British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) study suggests that over a third of adults (36%) are likely to delay dental treatment due to the high costs of dental treatments and over a quarter visit their dentist less often than in previous years due to economic problems. 27% of participants also state they are buying cheaper oral care products i.e. toothpaste and mouthwash, meaning they could be at risk of buying products that have not been independently approved by dental associations.

These figures are great cause for concern for dentists and patients across the UK. Oral health care can severely suffer if patients skip their regular check-ups, as chances of increasing a wide array of health problems can occur, for example tooth decay and gum disease.

Those willing to run the risk of ignoring regular dental routines have the short term in mind, when in the long term they will suffer both physically and financially.

So what can patients do to save money on dental costs during tough times? Many people are entitled to free NHS dental treatments, yet are unaware of their entitlements – this is always a good way of saving money and is worth checking. In addition, if you’re looking to change your dental products, check toothpastes have the essential ingredient of fluoride and are approved by dental experts.

The important message is to continue with regular dental appointments and routines, in order to prevent further problems in the future and save money in the long-term.

Have your say!
